How to Build a Greenhouse from Scrap
![]() |
Greenhouses - structures with transparent or sometimes translucent panels - are used to germinate and nurture seeds and seedlings, grow exotic tropical plants, and possibly even grow fruits and vegetables year round. Today's greenhouses can accommodate a variety of different growing methods including hydroponics. Hydroponics means gardening without soil and, although it often uses nutrient enriched water, other popular hydroponic media are clay and basalt rock. You can even use your greenhouse to sun dry fruits and vegetables. The best part is you won't need to spend a fortune. You can learn how to build a greenhouse from scrap materials.
The very first thing, of course, is deciding what kind of greenhouse you want to construct. If you are building with scrap materials, an indoor greenhouse is probably the best bet. The typical size of the indoor greenhouse is 4'x 8' but you can build your scrap greenhouse to suit your individual preferences. You will definitely want to sketch out your plans before starting construction. You will also need to have the proper tools and supplies on hand. At a minimum you'll need a hammer, nails, screws, a screwdriver, and a power drill.
When selecting your scrap materials, choose wood, aluminum and glass. An old window could be the perfect side or base for your greenhouse. Be creative and look for scrap wood, plastic, PVC, and glass that can be used for your purposes. There are myriad advantages to doing this.
- One, you're saving a great deal of money because shopping at the scrap yard is substantially cheaper than shopping at the hardware store.
- Two, you are helping the environment by recycling.
It's a win-win situation.
If you have little building experience, learning how to construct your greenhouse from scrap will take some time and effort. You will probably want to get a few books about constructing greenhouses before you are able to build your own scrap greenhouse. There are plenty of them available in the gardening section of any library, bookstore, or online. You can also choose to use the Internet for your research. For example, you can use it to find downloadable plans and helpful tips. Joining and participating in a gardening or greenhouse enthusiasts' group- online or off - can be a great source of knowledge and advice. Don't forget to check your ISP's list of Usenet newsgroups that are available for downloading, reading, and asking questions.
